One of the most recognizable figures in the field of digital banking and fintech in Greece, Sotiris Syrmakezis has played a major role in the digital transformation of the financial services sector in Greece and, through it, in the digital transformation of the Greek economy.
As Director of Informatics in 1998, he created the first internet banking and e-commerce card payment services in Greece, at Egnatia Bank, the most technologically upgraded bank of the '90s.
Two years later, as Director of Electronic Banking of Piraeus Bank, he introduced the first integrated electronic banking service "winbank". From 2010 onwards, winbank operated in 6 additional countries through the respective subsidiary banks of Piraeus Bank. Winbank presented a wide range of innovations such as paycenter services, easypay, instant cash, prepaid card family and many more. He left in mid-2015, having held the position of General Manager of Retail Banking since 2012.
In 2015, he joined Eurobank as Managing Director of Digital Banking and Technology, a member of the Executive Committee. He founded the most advanced digital transformation program of the Greek banking market and designed and implemented the first truly omnichannel banking platform in the country.
In 2018 he started at Praxiabank as General Manager of Retail Banking, Digital Banking and Technology. It left after 10 months and, a year later, the bank stopped trying to launch itself in the market.
During his career so far, he has served as a member of the Board of Directors in numerous listed and unlisted companies, two of which were banks in Greece and Romania and one is a payment institution based in Ireland. He is also very active in the Greek start-up community, having mentor roles in several startups and with a substantial contribution to a number of relevant initiatives.
Today, he is CEO of Throo Payments Europe, a digital payment and digital marketing services company based in Lithuania.
He holds a Master's degree in Technology and Innovation Management from the Technical University of Crete and is a graduate of the Department of Computer Science of the University of Crete.
